MCA National Youth deputy chief Mike Chong Yew Chuan issued a press statement on Thursday (6 August) demanding that Transport Minister Anthony Loke and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) answer for the arrest of Malaysia Airlines Second Officer Mohd Saufi Othman by Indonesian authorities.
The pilot allegedly carried 70,000 ecstasy pills and methamphetamine aboard Flight MH727 to Jakarta. Indonesian police recorded a positive drug test. A bottle of clean urine — intended to defeat screening — was recovered from his luggage.
Chong raised the questions: How did the pilot pass medical clearance? Are random drug tests conducted?
How did 26kg of narcotics clear four layers of airport security?
Chong, who contested the Cheras parliamentary seat in Kuala Lumpur during the 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022 and lost to DAP, closed with: “These are not political attacks. They are basic questions of public safety.”
Coordination Is Not Command
Airport security at KLIA is not solely under the Transport Ministry.
Customs clearance falls under the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, which reports to the Ministry of Finance (MOF).
Physical security and border control sit with PDRM and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) — both under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Transport Ministry coordinates policy, SOPs and operational flows with these agencies and with airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and its Aviation Security (AVSEC) team, but does not command their enforcement operations.
The distinction matters.
Coordination is not command.
Loke’s actual response to the incident: a joint multi-agency security review with the Home Ministry and MCBA to close the screening gaps — which is precisely the scope of what the Transport Ministry can and should do.
Chong’s statement did not mention the Home Ministry.
It did not mention the Finance Ministry, but it mentioned Loke 11 times.
DAP’s Syahredzan Johan, a lawyer and MP for Bangi, called the move “low class,” noting that border security answers to neither Loke nor the Transport Ministry.
The Public Responded, So Did the Pilots
The public noticed.

Few engaged with the substance of Chong’s safety questions; the remainder divided into three categories: jurisdictional corrections, electoral dismissals, and personal ridicule.
The electoral dismissals carried a specific edge.

YewNee Lim’s was also the comment that correctly mapped ministerial jurisdiction across all relevant agencies.
The Malaysian Airline Pilots Association also called on the Transport Minister to issue a statement — noting that Malaysia Airlines had yet to explain whether random drug testing would be expanded — though its concern centred on airline safety standards, not airport security jurisdiction.
