There’s a story circulating on social media of a Malaysian man who is allegedly facing the legal consequences of a conditional divorce after telling his friend he would pronounce talak tiga — an irrevocable three-count divorce under Islamic law — if Argentina lost the World Cup final.
Argentina lost to Spain; the condition was met.
The marriage, according to four schools of Islamic jurisprudence, may already be over.
Religious authorities have long warned the public that invoking talak — even in jest, even in a group chat, even during a football match — carries full legal weight under Islamic law and should never be used as casual currency.
The story spread across social media overnight, with a post describing a woman as buntu — lost — after her husband’s football bet came due.
It is not known whether the post was made by the wife herself or by someone close to the couple.
The Ruling Is Not Ambiguous
Former Federal Territories Mufti Datuk Seri Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri confirmed the ruling is not ambiguous.
Under the jumhur position — the majority view held across the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools — a conditional talak takes effect the moment its condition is fulfilled; intent does not override utterance.
Joking does not override utterance, and Argentina losing 0–1 to Spain in the early hours of Monday morning (20 July) overrode everything.
“There are three things,” Zulkifli quoted Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), “whose seriousness is taken seriously and whose joking is also taken seriously: marriage, divorce, and reconciliation.”
The couple has been advised to present themselves immediately to the Syariah Court or the relevant religious office for verification and resolution under Islamic law.
The wife did not make the bet, she did not set the condition, and she was not in the room when Argentina’s defence collapsed.
She is, however, the one who must now go to court.
