Most politicians celebrate a court win with a press conference. Syed Saddiq chose to run home instead.
The Muar Member of Parliament began a 170-kilometre on-foot journey from Putrajaya to Muar, Johor, on Thursday (16 July), hours after the Dewan Rakyat adjourned for the day.
He calls it the Larian Kesyukuran — the Gratitude Run.
The timing was deliberate.
Three days earlier, on 13 July, the Federal Court rejected the prosecution’s final appeal, upholding his complete acquittal on all four criminal charges involving misappropriated party funds.
The verdict closed a legal battle that had shadowed him for six years — including through the 2022 General Election, which he won despite the pending charges.
The Route, The Rules
Syed Saddiq started at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya — the building he called “the people’s final bastion of justice” — and is expected to finish at Laman Maharani in Muar on Sunday, July 19.
The rules he set for himself are strict: no support vehicles, entirely on foot, under police monitoring, and live-streamed in full on his social media platforms.
On his first night, he pushed through Salak Tinggi and finished the late-night leg in Labu, Negeri Sembilan, where a large crowd gathered to cheer him on past midnight.
His mother, Sharifah Mahani Syed Abdul Aziz, and his fiancée, singer-actress Bella Astillah, flagged him off at Putrajaya.
Bella is accompanying him for the full 170km by bicycle.
The Story Within the Story: A Constituency That Voted on Faith
What makes the run more than a physical feat is what it represents.
Muar voters returned Syed Saddiq to Parliament in November 2022, knowing he was facing four criminal charges.
They did not wait for a verdict.
The Larian Kesyukuran is his answer to that — a four-day, 170-kilometre, fully public thank-you note to the people who trusted him before the courts did.
It is also his second major run.
In early 2024, he completed a 200km Langkah Muar from Muar to Parliament to protest the government’s denial of constituency allocations for opposition MPs, raising roughly RM160,000 in the process.
That run was a protest; this one is a celebration — but the fundraising instinct is the same.
Raising Funds Along the Way
The run doubles as a crowdfunding campaign at lariankesyukuranmuar.com, with a target of RM200,000.
The public reaction to Syed Saddiq’s Larian Kesyukuran has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic, resulting in unexpected crowds and rapid fundraising milestones.
On Day 1 alone, donations reached RM54,692.
Funds raised will go toward food baskets for struggling families and iPads for underprivileged university students in Muar.
Syed Saddiq has separately pledged RM500,000 in student scholarships from his service budget.
