Activist Firdaus Wong Deletes Waze Over Israel Ties, Gets Called Out For Still Using Facebook

Wong, a Malaysian Chinese Muslim-convert activist, deleted Waze over its Israeli ties and asked Malaysians to do the same, but was met with comments asking why he still uses Facebook.

Malaysian Chinese Islamic preacher and activist Firdaus Wong Wai Hung announced he had deleted the Waze navigation app, citing the company’s ties to Israel, and urged his followers to do the same.

“Saya dah padamkan aplikasi Waze semalam. Tak mampu buat semua, jangan tinggal semua” (I deleted the Waze app yesterday. Can’t do everything, don’t leave everything undone), Wong wrote in a Facebook post to his 233,000 followers.

In the same post, Wong preemptively dismissed potential critics, writing that he would not engage with anyone who asked why he didn’t boycott other companies too, referring to such commenters as “makhluk kurang akal” (creatures lacking intellect).

A screenshot circulated alongside the post shows Waze’s terms of service, which state the app is operated by Waze Mobile Ltd., a company incorporated under Israeli law and headquartered in Tel Aviv.

The terms also state that any disputes fall under the jurisdiction of a Tel Aviv district court.

Waze was founded in Israel and acquired by Google in 2013.

Comments Turn To Facebook Itself

The post drew over a hundred comments, many of which pointed out that Wong made the announcement on Facebook, a platform owned by Meta.

One commenter listed details about Meta’s operations, including claims that the company complies with Israeli government requests to remove content and that former Meta security and policy staff have held positions linked to the Israeli government and military.

Other commenters said they had stopped using Waze years earlier, with several citing the Gaza war as their reason.

Some questioned why Wong continues using other services also linked to Israeli-founded technology, including Google Maps and iPhones.

At the same time, some commenters expressed support for Wong’s decision.

No Stranger To Controversy

Wong is a Chinese-Muslim convert who works as an independent Islamic preacher, activist, and founder of the NGO Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM).

Raised as a Buddhist, he became a freethinker at 18 and later converted to Islam after moving from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, Sarawak.

He has previously faced controversy for advising non-Muslim teenagers to convert to Islam without their parents’ knowledge, a video the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled unlawful in October 2025 for violating parents’ constitutional rights.

He also drew criticism for questioning why non-Muslim content creators make videos in Bahasa Melayu and for commentary on land disputes involving non-Muslim places of worship.

Facebook Bans Haven’t Stopped Him

In early 2026, he faced backlash after claiming a student involved in a Quran desecration case was someone he was guiding toward converting to Islam, a claim the Pahang State Religious Council denied having any record of.

He has also been the subject of police reports and calls from a political leader urging him to be barred from public schools.

Wong previously ran a grocery store called MyKampung Fresh Mart, which closed around 2020–2021, and later had to publicly deny claims of sabotage after critics accused him of trying to hurt competitor KK Mart during the “Allah socks” controversy.

His primary Facebook pages were banned and geo-blocked in Malaysia, but he continues to bypass restrictions using a backup network of multiple active accounts and alternative platforms.
