Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg has been trending in Malaysia after he was sighted in Penang last weekend.

The star of blockbusters like the Transformers franchise, and critically acclaimed crime drama The Departed, landed on our soil on 10 July to film scenes for The Big Fix, an upcoming action-thriller produced by Netflix.

Across Malaysian social media, many shared photos of the famous actor taken from afar.

Film extras also posted photos and videos of Wahlberg while on set, although whether it’s allowed or not is unclear.

Some social media users in the comments section said large Hollywood productions such as this usually have policies against recording on set and posting the videos online.

One user on Threads who claimed to be an extra on the set said she was anxious about recording Wahlberg behind the scenes, as she was afraid of being told off by the production team.

“Guess who we’re shooting with today? Actually, we’re afraid of recording because we’d get scolded by the production team. But the cast are fine with it,” she said in her Threads post before it was removed.

In the comments section, many highlighted that there are usually policies against recording a film production’s behind-the-scenes and immediately posting it online.

Some also said that it’s the production team that would have a problem with it, and that the cast won’t mind because they are being paid to act and not to mind the production itself.

One muruku seller posted a photo and video of the action movie star sitting at her stall during the film’s production.

“Even Mark Wahlberg has come to hang out at our stall. What about you guys?” she said in her Threads post.

A lot of people are glazing over Riz Ahmed

Based on social media, it seems that many people are forgetting that British actor and Academy Award-winner Riz Ahmed is also in town for the production of The Big Fix as Wahlberg’s co-star.

Ahmed had starred in multiple blockbuster action movies such as Venom (2018) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

He won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for co-writing and starring in the 2021 film The Long Goodbye. However, Ahmed is highly acclaimed for his Best Actor nomination for the 2021 drama Sound of Metal.

Beyond the Oscars, Ahmed also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for The Night Of, an eight-part crime drama miniseries.

He also has an extensive list of awards won in international film festivals, as well as numerous nominations across a wide range of categories.

Based on a true story, The Big Fix (2026) follows a former Interpol officer inside FIFA who uncovers a global match-fixing scandal, sparking a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase with international syndicates.

The movie is helmed by Icelandic actor and film director Baltasar Kormákur Baltasarsson, who directed films like 2 Guns (2013) and Everest (2015).
