Food can be a very subjective topic, as everyone has different tastes and preferences. There might be certain foods you love that someone else would hate, or vice versa.

Malaysians can actually be a very adventurous bunch and are willing to try out all sorts of food combinations, and the ones that end up tasting good would stay on a menu for good.

However, there are instances when a type of food or food combination gets collectively bashed because of how it goes against the very basics of culinary practices.

Milo Ais Dinosaur Maggi

A video shared on social media platform Threads by @rasydan_77 garnered the ire of many Malaysians due to what’s widely considered a highly incompatible food combination.

The video starts off with someone handing a cook at a mamak restaurant a bag of Milo powder and packets of Maggi Kari. Right off the bat, the “chef” begins mixing a few scoops of Milo powder in a plastic mug with water and ice before putting freshly boiled Maggi noodles in the mug.

He then pours more Milo over it and tops it off with some Milo powder, making it a “Milo Ais Dinosaur” with instant noodles swimming in it.

Thankfully, he did not pour any of the curry seasoning from the Maggi packets into the beverage (at least we think he didn’t).

The unconventional combination triggers Malaysians

Malaysians in the comments section were not too happy to see the video. It seems that the Milo and Maggi combination is akin to culinary blasphemy, and we kind of get it.

Milo is a chocolate drink that’s mostly enjoyed for its sweet simplicity. With instant noodles added into the mix, one can only imagine the odd texture and mouth-feel of a glass of Milo with thick, chewy Maggi.

“How does anyone eat this without getting a stomach ache?” asked one Threads user.

“My mum gets angry when we play with food!” another user commented.

Other Threads users jokingly called for the police, the health ministry, and even the Malaysia Civil Defence Force in protest of the Maggi/Milo combo.

Other pairings Malaysians are not comfortable with

Malaysian social media is constantly being flooded with “viral” foods that range from brilliant, to outright ridiculous.

One bizarre pairing that made locals cringe was air kosong (plain water) with cheese. This was popularised by Restoran Aliff in Sri Petaling, which also sold Coca-Cola with cheese, Milo with cheese, and “Coca-Cola Tomyam”.

These unconventional conconctions are not only limited to beverages, either. Over the past years, some rather odd food combinations have made appearances on Malaysian cyberspace.

One example is this white rice with durian, topped with a sprinkle of Milo powder on top.

Open up TikTok or Threads in Malaysia and you’ll find all sorts of “experimental” foods no one would have ever thought of.

That, in some weird way, is part of the beauty of being Malaysian. We’re serious about food, but are not afraid to go wild with it.
