A foreign traveller at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) allowed his young child to defecate into a rubbish bin at a departure gate waiting area, in full view of other passengers waiting to board a Kuala Lumpur-to-Penang flight.
The incident was captured on video and shared on Threads, where it has since gone viral.
According to the passenger who posted the account, the father held the child over a rubbish bin while the child defecated.
The act took place in the open waiting area, with other passengers present.
The woman who posted the video said the smell spread across the entire gate area.
The toilet was right there, she wrote.
After the act, the child’s mother was seen walking to the nearby public toilet to wash her hands.
Public Anger, Calls For Decency
The post drew immediate and widespread condemnation online.
Commenters pointed out that public toilets were located directly behind the gate area, with several calling on travellers to observe basic public decency in shared spaces — some even going so far as to identify the family as Chinese tourists, a claim that has not been verified.
The allegation added further fuel to the debate, with several commenters citing past incidents involving Chinese tourists in Malaysian public spaces — though others cautioned against drawing conclusions before the family’s identity is confirmed.
For some, the incident quickly became a tit-for-tat.
A number of commenters drew comparisons to a recent controversy involving Malaysian tourist Nur Asyiqin Mohd Dalil, who triggered international outcry after posting TikTok videos mocking locals in China for allegedly being “smelly” and unwashed.
They demanded that media outlets that had widely reported the Nur Asyiqin controversy now give equal coverage to the KLIA2 incident.
The family’s identity and nationality have not been confirmed. MAHB has been contacted for comment, and a response is awaited.
