For years, Carlsberg Malaysia’s harvest season campaigns celebrated Sabah and Sarawak through music and visuals.
This year, the brand turned the camera around.
People Behind The Rhythm is a trilogy of short films released as part of Carlsberg’s ongoing Raikan Bersama Sabah & Sarawak initiative.
Rather than showcasing the finished production, each film follows the people who made it — their communities, their creative journeys, and the cultural traditions they drew from.
The trilogy is directed by Sarah Lois, an award-winning Sarawakian filmmaker whose work is rooted in her Kelabit heritage.
The series was developed in close collaboration with local communities, according to the company.
Three Films, Five creatives
Three creatives are featured across the films:
- Melina William, lyricist of Rhythm of Harvest, reflects on how music carries cultural identity across distance — particularly for Sabahans and Sarawakians living away from home.
- Arthur Darren, a choreographer, speaks to how traditional dance can be reinterpreted for younger generations without losing its roots.
- Nelson Lip and T. Bagak, artists from Sabah and Sarawak, respectively, whose rice-inspired designs appeared on Carlsberg’s limited packaging, also feature in the broader campaign.
Stefano Clini, Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia, said that Rhythm of Harvest has always been about celebrating Sabah and Sarawak in a way that feels true to the people and communities it represents.
With People Behind The Rhythm, we wanted to step back and let those voices come through — because these are their stories, told in their own way.
The trilogy sits within Carlsberg’s Raikan Bersama Sabah & Sarawak platform — a harvest season campaign that spans music, packaging design, visual storytelling and community engagement.
