And yet, here we are — and honestly? It’s the best idea anyone’s had this tournament.

Starting from the Round of 16, sixteen rescue cats and dogs from SPCA Selangor are officially Malaysia’s newest football analysts.

No salary demands, no hot takes on formation.

Just pure, unfiltered animal instinct — and the kind of chaotic energy that makes football worth watching in the first place.

The campaign, cheekily dubbed “Furry Forecast,” is a three-way collab between local coconut beverage brand Coco Loca, wholesome food label Real Food, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor — brought together by PR and storytelling agency GO Communications, which dreamed the whole thing up.

The mechanics are beautifully simple.

One day before each Round of 16 match, a video drops across the partners’ social media pages featuring one of the sixteen shelter animals making their pick.

Think Paul the Octopus (who predicted the outcome of eight matches at the 2010 World Cup) — except furrier, more adoptable, and considerably less aquatic.

Here’s the thing about the “Furry Forecast” that separates it from your average feel-good corporate stunt: the number 16 isn’t a coincidence.

Sixteen animals, 16 Round of 16 matches.

Each animal gets a match; each match gets a story.

The campaign essentially writes its own content calendar and runs itself straight through to the final whistle — giving every single animal a recurring spotlight, a personality, and a reason for someone scrolling at midnight to think, “wait, I kind of love that dog.”

That’s not just cute; that’s a direct pipeline to adoption.

Christine Chin, Chairman of SPCA Selangor, put it plainly: “Whether they are accurate in deciding the winners of this year’s World Cup, one thing is clear — they are already winners in our hearts.”

The SPCA Selangor shelter in Ampang is home to about 180 dogs and puppies at any one time — 150 adults, 30 pups, and a waiting list that never really empties. Space is tight, and the math is simple: the only way a new animal gets a spot is when someone else gets adopted out. Every adoption isn’t just a happy ending — it’s the beginning of another animal’s story.

Nearly Seven Decades Of Doing The Unglamorous Work

Founded in 1958, SPCA Selangor is one of Malaysia’s oldest animal welfare organisations, operating from a two-acre centre in Ampang to shelter abandoned animals, investigate cruelty reports, and find permanent homes for rescued pets.

Its Managed Adoption Programme rehabilitates surrendered and rescued animals before matching them with adopters, while its Stray Free Selangor initiative tackles overpopulation through mass spay-and-neuter drives — offering a humane alternative to culling.

An inspectorate team responds to reports of abuse across the Klang Valley, and an education arm runs volunteer programmes and workshops to build genuine empathy for animals within the community.

The organisation is a non-profit and receives no government funding, relying almost entirely on donations, sponsorships, and community support to keep operations running.

Donations are tax-deductible, and supporters can contribute by sponsoring a kennel, volunteering at the centre, or making a direct financial contribution.

Hundreds of animals pass through the centre every month — what happens to them depends largely on the people willing to get involved.
