[Watch] Malaysians Raised RM3,884 In Three Hours For A Stray Cat With Maggots Eating Its Face
A Facebook donation drive by Dunia Kucing Malaysia raised RM3,884 in under three hours on the morning of 24 June — contributions ranging from RM5 to RM50, from strangers across the country who had never met the cat — and Tam is alive, quiet, and eating.
A cat found in a Kelantan village with severe facial wounds and maggot infestation has been taken in for treatment after a public donation drive on Facebook raised more than RM3,800 in under three hours.
The cat, named Tam, was discovered in a kampung area in a weakened state — severely underweight, with its face described by rescuers as “hancur dan berulat,” destroyed and infested with maggots.
It was brought to MHI Animal Medical Centre in Bachok, Kelantan, where a veterinarian issued a treatment quotation of RM3,210 on Tuesday (23 June).
The bill covered 10 days of isolation ward care, blood tests, IV fluid therapy, wound dressing for what the clinic identified as sporotrichosis (a fungal infection that destroys soft tissue), sedation, surgery, daily medication and discharge care.
The response was immediate; by 6:20 am on Wednesday (24 June), RM1,507 had been collected.
By 7:20 am, RM2,403 and by 8:50 am, RM2,963.
The drive closed shortly after, raising RM3,884 — enough to cover the full bill, with some left over.
Donation receipts posted in the comments showed contributions from across the country, ranging from RM5 to RM50, made through Maybank, Public Bank, BSN, Hong Leong Bank, TNG eWallet and other platforms.
As of Tuesday evening, Tam was described as quiet but responsive, able to eat independently if food was placed close to it.
Rescuers noted the cat may be unable to smell due to the damage to its nose.
