KL ‘Atas’ Mall Diner’s Gripe: ‘They Charged Me For Extra Rice I Didn’t Request’

A Malaysian man’s complaint about paying RM10.50 for fried chicken rice has divided the public over whether mall food is too expensive.

The controversy began when the man took to the Facebook group “Pavilion 2 Bukit Jalil 大小事 ” to vent his frustration over what he considered an overpriced takeaway meal from a well-known chain restaurant.

According to the receipt he posted, the breakdown was straightforward: RM2.50 for white rice, RM1.30 for extra rice, and RM6.70 for a fried chicken leg, plus 6% service tax—totalling RM10.50.

But it wasn’t just the price that got under his skin.

The man said he could accept the high cost, but what really bothered him was that the staff allegedly added extra rice without asking and charged him for it.

“There won’t be a next time!” he declared in his post.

Is RM10.50 Too Much? The Internet Can’t Agree

The complaint quickly divided the public into two camps.

“Too expensive! At least give some curry sauce,” one commenter griped, suggesting the man could report the restaurant to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN).

One piece of chicken and rice for RM10.50? Even RM7 would be too much.

But plenty of others jumped to the restaurant’s defence.

“That’s expensive? A big plate of rice costs RM2.50 normally, and fried chicken at a regular mamak is already RM6-7,” one user pointed out.

“If you eat at the mall, how cheap do you expect it to be? You went to Pavilion—you should be grateful they didn’t charge you RM20 or RM30,” another wrote.

Everything is Getting More Expensive Now

One particularly blunt commenter summed it up: “Boss says: If you can’t afford it, don’t eat there. You don’t know the price of rice, you don’t know the cost of chicken. You’re eating at Pavilion—do you know how much the rent is?”

Several defenders noted that prices have gone up everywhere.

I think RM10.50 is perfectly reasonable. How is that hurting you? Everything is getting more expensive now. You probably haven’t bought groceries in a while—vegetables have all gone up in price.

One user even sarcastically noted: “Pavilion Bukit Jalil… the price is reasonable.”

So far, the restaurant’s management has not responded to the complaint.

The incident raises a familiar question for Malaysians: When you choose to eat at a high-end mall, are you paying for convenience and ambience—or simply paying too much?
