A Malaysian man who started an online debate over his suggestion for Muslims to forgo visiting a pet-friendly shopping mall has been called out for hypocrisy.
Social media users unearthed his history of posting sexually explicit comments in Threads on women’s accounts.
The controversy began when user amran.hassan70 posted that Sunway Square Mall’s pet-friendly policy would make Muslims uncomfortable, explicitly focusing on dogs being allowed in the mall.
He suggested Muslims forgo the Bandar Sunway shopping centre altogether.
“If this is true, it will make Muslims feel uncomfortable. So for Muslims, the choice of mall is our choice. If we already know there’s a mall like this, just forgo it,” he wrote in Malay.
The post, which has garnered over 20,900 views, quickly drew criticism.
The backlash intensified when other users discovered the same account had left inappropriate comments on women’s posts, including remarks about their bodies and appearance.

Selective Moral Outrage
Screenshots shared widely across the platform show amran.hassan70 commenting “Nice bobbs” and “Nice beautiful and good shape” on women’s photos—comments posted just weeks ago.
Critics mocked the contradiction, noting the irony of someone afraid to touch dogs yet comfortable leaving inappropriate comments on women’s posts, while others sarcastically called out the behaviour as pretending to be the most pious Muslim.
The debate extended beyond just the original poster’s hypocrisy.
One response gained significant traction with close to 2,000 likes, shifting focus to what many saw as the real problem in malls—poorly supervised children.
Some critics argued that concerns about pets were misplaced, as badly behaved children already cause chaos in shopping centres, citing incidents of kids destroying festive decorations during Deepavali and Christmas and running amok without parental intervention.

Boycott Call Falls Flat
Other reactions to the pet-friendly policy also saw calls for boycott, but they were largely met with ridicule rather than support.
Several users pointed out that Sunway Group’s extensive holdings—including Sunway Pyramid mall, hotels, and logistics operations—would make a meaningful boycott nearly impossible.
“If you want to boycott Sunway Square Mall, boycott all Sunway places too,” wrote Threads user wan_raziman, suggesting boycotters would also need to avoid Sunway Pyramid and be selective about online shopping, as many logistics companies operate from Sunway-owned warehouses.
Others welcomed the potential boycott for practical reasons.
“Yes please boycott. I want to see golden retrievers, huskies and malamutes walking around,” one user wrote, while another added: “And easier to get parking too!”
One Threads user, elyanasparks, argues that Islam teaches compassion to all creatures and that “haram” means having rules to follow, not that the animal itself should be hated or insulted—urging people to avoid rather than vilify what they consider forbidden.
