What started as a culinary guide has become Malaysia’s passport to global recognition, transforming the nation into a must-visit food destination and driving significant economic growth across multiple sectors.
Since the Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang launched in 2022, Malaysia’s food scene has been elevated from regional favourite to international pilgrimage site, with restaurants, hotels and the broader tourism industry reaping the benefits.
The guide’s impact extends far beyond restaurant reviews.
Hotel bookings surge and restaurant reservations fill up during the annual guide reveal, while Malaysia’s position as a gastronomic destination has gained renewed global prominence.
The economic impact reaches across industries – restaurants featured in the guide report increased visibility, higher customer numbers and growing international appeal.
This success creates a network effect, benefiting local farmers, fishermen, producers and artisans who supply these establishments.
Malaysian Chefs Gain Global Recognition Through Michelin Stars
Malaysia’s tourism figures reflect this growth.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC), the country recorded tourist spending of RM106.7 billion in 2024, with gastronomy contributing more than 16 per cent of the total – a growth of over 1 per cent from the previous year.
A 2025 study by Ernst and Young titled “Beyond the Michelin Stars” found that 76 per cent of travellers are willing to extend their stays to dine at Michelin-recommended restaurants, while over 80 per cent are prepared to pay more for exceptional dining experiences.
Malaysian chefs are making their mark on the global stage.
Kuala Lumpur’s Dewakan, the country’s first and only two-Michelin-starred restaurant, continues to draw international visitors eager to experience Chef Darren Teoh’s sustainable, modern cuisine made with local ingredients.
The 2026 edition celebrates new one-Michelin-starred establishments Akar and Terra Dining, showcasing the rising talent of Malaysian chefs who blend local identity with modern techniques.
In Penang, Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery preserves Peranakan heritage while Au Jardin offers contemporary interpretations, demonstrating how tradition and innovation can coexist.
Recognition Beyond The Kitchen
The guide also celebrates service excellence – Maverick Fung of restaurant K won the 2026 Service Award, while Chef Chin Hua Wong of Shu received the Young Chef Award.
Bidou, Chef Darren Teoh’s French nouvelle cuisine restaurant, earned the Opening of the Year award.
These recognitions help position Kuala Lumpur not just as a transit hub but as a dining capital in its own right.
Malaysia’s culinary success story emphasises sustainability, local sourcing and heritage preservation.
The partnership between the Michelin Guide and Malaysia’s tourism stakeholders reflects a commitment to supporting local producers, protecting biodiversity, and celebrating culinary innovation.
With 151 recognised establishments in the Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2026, Malaysia has established itself as a benchmark for culinary diversity and excellence in the region.
The guide has amplified Malaysia’s existing food culture, giving it a global vocabulary that invites international visitors to experience the nation’s unique blend of heritage and culinary ambition.
As Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the Michelin Guide’s influence continues to shape travel itineraries and partnerships, proving that food can serve as both an economic driver and cultural bridge connecting communities while inspiring national pride.
