Malaysians have condemned the Chinese government’s actions towards the Hui Muslim ethnicity following reports of a polemic involving the Najiaying Mosque in Yunnan, China.

The mosque, over 650 years old, has reportedly sparked massive protests by the Muslim community, resulting in arrests and extrajudicial actions in the region.

Taking to social media, Malaysians have called on the international community to express concern and protest against the indifference of the Chinese authorities towards the culture of the Hui Muslim group.

They insisted that the Chinese government needs to respect the history involving the role and contribution of the Hui Muslim ethnic group in the region, which is part of the roots of Chinese culture and society.

Some individuals have also appealed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to intervene.

They are urging him to raise the issue with the Chinese government and call for a peaceful resolution that respects the rights of religious minorities in China.

Angkatan Belia Malaysia Malaysia (ABIM) said the incident had highlighted the importance of acknowledging the contributions of all ethnic groups in shaping the culture and society of a nation.

ABIM, led by Anwar as its president from 1974 to 1982, said its call for diversity and universal cosmopolitanism is a reminder that cultural diversity should be respected and celebrated.

ABIM president Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said the Chinese government’s actions towards the Hui Muslim ethnicity had been described as sad and indifferent towards the ethnic diversity in the country.

It is hoped that ABIM’s call for concern and protest will encourage the Chinese authorities to respect the cultural diversity of all ethnic groups.
