Marrybrown, Malaysia’s homegrown Halal Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) has made history by opening its first outlet in the land down under.

Located in Melbourne, the outlet opened its doors to Australians and Malaysians there alike at the Burwood One Shopping Centre.

The opening was officiated by Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living – marking a significant moment for the country as the first Malaysian halal QSR to make its mark in Australia.

Dato’ Joshua Liew, CEO of Marrybrown and son of the founder couple, Dato’ Lawrence Liew and Datin Nancy Liew expressed his excitement at the launch of the brand’s first outlet in Australia and for the opportunity to share their passion for good food with the people of Melbourne and beyond.

“We are thrilled to bring Marrybrown’s unique flavours and hospitality to the Australian market.

Our goal has always been to bring joy to people through good food, and we believe that our signature dishes, including our crispy chicken, will be a hit with both the Australian and Malaysian customers.

We are committed to providing our customers with a high-quality dining experience, and we look forward to welcoming them to our new location in Melbourne.”

What’s the menu there?

Besides the usual crispy fried chicken that the brand is known for, it will also serve its burgers and wraps.

Being a local brand with over 40 years of history, they’ll also be serving Malaysian-based dishes as well. Those include Nasi Lemak, Fried Rice with Satay, Curry Rice, and many more.

Maybe in the coming years, they could whip up something Australian based too? Who knows?

Going international

Being the first local halal fast-food restaurant chain in Malaysia since 1981 in Johor Bahru, they currently have around 500 restaurants across 16 countries.

This is far from the very first international outlet they opened in Singapore and then in Brunei in 1990. They also entered the market in China in 1996 and moved on to tackle India and Sri Lanka in 1999. After that, they also made their way into the Middle East, the African continent and also, Europe.

Their first outlet in Europe was in Sweden, which opened in 2020 but due to unforeseen circumstances, they had to close it down. But that didn’t stop them from still seeking more suitable areas internationally to further widen their empire.

Even now, they’ve reached another milestone by expanding to the Australian continent. They are also envisioning higher growth in the Australian market by opening 30 more outlets across Australia, spanning across different states in the near future.

As Malaysia’s leading fast-food chain, we’re proud to expand our presence in Australia and showcase the best of Malaysian flavors and its rich culinary heritage on the global stage.

Our plans for the future include building on the success of our Melbourne locations and expanding to other cities across Australia, such as Sydney and Perth.
