Mohd Syahidan Alias or Edan Syah is no stranger to the world of marathons for Malaysians. In fact, he once made headlines for completing a marathon at the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival wearing a Jalur Gemilang costume!

The run took place on Malaysia Day in 2018, where Edan made world history for the fastest marathon run with a national flag costume with a time of 2 hours and 54 minutes.

Now he’s done it again, everyone. Not in a flag costume, but in a full Baju Melayu attire complete with a samping and songkok (men’s headdress) too.

On the third day of Eid (in London) last Sunday, Edan ran a full marathon in under 3 hours at the 2023 TCS London Marathon dressed in a full Baju Melayu attire sponsored and made specially by Bulan Bintang. He made the Guinness World Record for the Fastest Full Marathon (42.2km) in a Traditional Malay Dress (Male).

This 35-year-old certified running coach finished the marathon with a time record of 2 hours, 49 minutes and 22 seconds, which he himself was proud of as he broke his previous world marathon record in 2018.

“I hope my attempt for the world record this year on Aidilfitri will inspire more Malaysians to do great things for the country. Together, let’s Make Baju Melayu Great Again.”

Edan shared his victory on his Instagram, thanking his partners and collaborators that supported his cause of making his country proud and also, making Baju Melayu Great Again.

He also thanked his supporters known as Team Edan Syah for donating around RM10,000 to this charity campaign, Road To London for Team Livability UK, in a separate post.

No ordinary Baju Melayu

Edan’s Baju Melayu was custom-made by Bulan Bintang, a local brand known for traditional attire.

According to Utusan Malaysia, the design of the outfit was headed by a Bulan Bintang fashion designer named Mas Anneesya.

She said the Baju Melayu was made using jersey and mesh fabric as they are light, breathable and not burdensome. It ensures that athletes can run at a stable momentum without affecting their movement.

“We also produced long pants with pockets on the left and right and an elastic waist because of their practicality for long-distance running. The hidden zipper on the ankle covered with fabric is also designed and innovated to prevent the feet from bruising or chafing as well as making it easier for the athlete to put on the shoes.

“Even more interesting, the printed samping design worn by Edan Syah has a pocket that serves to place energy gel for runners and a small water bottle while the songkok uses velvet fabric and mesh with larger hole sizes to allow more ventilation,” explained Mas further.

Although it is rare to see people do a marathon run in Baju Melayu outfits, the impossible is always achieved by Malaysians. There have been records of people wearing full Baju Melayu outfits in marathons before but only in Malaysia.
