An ambassador is a nation’s highest-ranking representative to a specific country or international organization abroad.

In Malaysia, the government chose Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz as its Ambassador to the United States, much to many people’s surprise.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Nazri, also a graduate of Lincoln’s Inn in the United Kingdom, was chosen because of his extensive experience as a member of the national administration.

The social media has since been flooded with complaints from people unhappy with Nazri’s appointment.

Most of them are pessimistic about the choice of candidate and give their reasons why.

Some said it might be premature for critics to share their worst fears and best hopes for what may unfold.

Others questioned if Nazri was paid, in a veiled reference to accusations of nepotism in the new government.

UMNO Warlord

Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz, a former MP, had long held the ‘Yang Berhormat’ title in Perak before he quit and ‘retired’ from politics.

In the 15th General Election (GE15) last November, Nazri decided not to defend the Padang Rengas parliamentary seat to make way for a new face.

Before the election, the former UMNO ‘warlords’ was reported to be appointed as Malaysian ambassadors, with Nazri linked to several countries, including France and Switzerland.

Later there was an allegation that Switzerland rejected the proposal when Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was Prime Minister.

Confirmation after that came from Nazri himself, who came forward to explain that he had to turn down the position because he had to give up his MP post.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also denied that the country rejected his nomination as Malaysian Ambassador to Switzerland.

In a written answer in the Dewan Rakyat on 22 March 2022, Wisma Putra informed Switzerland that individuals still serving as Parliament members could not fill the position.
