A local preacher, PU Syed, wants the upcoming local movie ‘Pulau’ to be censored or banned.

The film stars Ms Pui Yi, the first Southeast Asian woman to be featured on the American adult magazine Penthouse cover.

PU Syed said that many scenes in the movie show ladies dressing inappropriately.

He also lambasted the movie for containing racy scenes and called on Malaysians to boycott it altogether.

The trailer shows a scene in which one of the characters removes her shirt in the jungle and then makes love with her partner.

There was also a sexually explicit scene that showed Pui Yi on top of another man while saying, “Let me show you a magic trick”.

At the same time, local NGOs, such as the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organization (Mapim), have labelled the movie inappropriate and urged the authorities to act.

In its defence, the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia (LPF) said the movie is OK because it’s a horror film, not porn.

The film was conditionally approved & classified P13 by LPF on 15 Sept 2022.

Besides Pui Yi, the movie features a line-up of famous local actors such as Alif Satar, Amelia Henderson, Namron, Ikmal Amry, Sabronzo, Mark O’Dea, Sanjna Suri and many more.

Pui Yi is touted as Malaysia’s top female social media influencer.

With over 20 million Instagram followers, including rapper Snoop Dogg, her influence transcends cultural norms.

Meanwhile, critics have also trained their sights on Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

They said he could have done more in his capacity as a minister.

In response, Fahmi also voiced his objection to the movie.
