[Watch] Tracker Dogs Put Their Energy And Intelligence Into Honourable Work In Batang Kali

Search and rescue dogs can specialise in finding people alive in the hopes of rescuing them.

Tracker dogs (K9) are essential in the search and rescue (SAR) operation at Father’s Organic Farm in Batang Kali.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the K9s are from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

According to Norazam, nine K9s were at the location on Sunday (18 Dec).

He added that no tracker dogs (K9) have been injured so far.

All these K9 dogs have expertise in detecting bodies buried in the ground, under rocks or water.

With their keen sense of smell, the K9s assisted the rescue team in all conditions – thick mud, slush or rain.

The dogs are intelligent, confident, focused, listen well and respond to the handler. 

Once a dog is given a piece of an item with the scent of a specific person, it can lead the handler down the path that person took. 

The K9s earned a glowing performance review in Batang Kali.

In a Facebook posting by Bernama, a K9 named Grouse reportedly found three victims buried in Sector C, where the landslide occurred.

For the record, the operation to search for victims has entered its fourth day.

The agencies involved include the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team (STORM) and the Ministry of Health (KKM).

In the incident early Friday morning, the landslide was estimated to involve as much as 450,000 cubic meters of land.

A total of 94 victims were involved, 61 were reported safe, another 24 were confirmed dead, and nine were still being sought.

In addition, it also involved a total area of ​​225,000 cubic meters (m³).

The landslide dimensions in the area involve an area of 500 meter-long, 200 meter-wide and a depth of eight meters.
