The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had not taken a salary since Covid-19 hit the country.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the King empathised with the economic hardship faced by the people.

I want to inform you that Tuanku Agong has refused a salary since Covid-19, earlier than me. Your Majesty has not drawn any salary from the government since Covid-19.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the King not drawing a salary.

Anwar made the remark during a press conference after recently chairing a Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya.

Previously, Anwar had taken a stance not to receive a salary for the post of prime minister as a way to restore people’s confidence, especially in the unity government he led.

Anwar was sworn in as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia on 24 November.
The Cabinet also agreed to carry out a salary cut of 20 per cent every month to show solidarity with the people’s hardships, notably rising prices.

Previously, the King had also taken a pay cut and other austerity measures.
