Shahril Hamdan has resigned as Umno’s information chief with immediate effect and joined Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s call for party president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to resign.
The former Umno deputy Youth chief said Zahid should set an example by stepping down and taking accountability for the party’s devastating loss.
He added that the BN chairman should let other people lead the discussions on the party’s next big step.
In a statement, Shahril said there must be a collective responsibility over the coalition’s defeat in the 15th general election (GE15).
I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me and will never forget it. This is about the greater good. Like many others, I will remain loyal to Umno (because) the party’s fight is not over yet.Former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan
Yesterday, Shahril was defeated in a four-cornered fight for the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat. The seat was won by Pakatan Harapan’s Adly Zahari with 8,178 votes while Shahril received 27,288.
In wake of his resignation, Umno’s Supreme Council member Isham Jalil will assume the position of the party’s new information chief.
He was previously the Selangor Barisan Nasional information chief before getting axed in June as the post was not provided for in the coalition’s constitution, Free Malaysia Today reported.
