Port Dickson voters have arguably the most entertaining candidate in the 15th General Election (GE15).

‘Celebrity’ and social activist Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah is contesting as an independent candidate in the parliamentary seat last held by Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Popularly known as ‘Ayahanda’ and ‘Rani Kulup’, he vowed to spearhead his campaign by coming face-to-face with voters throughout Port Dickson.

True to style, the flamboyant figure dressed as a traditional Malay warrior on nomination day.

Unlike some who pulled in the last minute, he prides himself on having the guts to contest.

I want to bring up the problems of the people, especially the many military veterans in Port Dickson since this place is known as the army town.

Rani Kulup on his decision to contest in Port Dickson.

On why he deserves the votes, Rani Kulup said he has been working with a non-governmental organization (NGO) for 22 years.

He hopes the slogan ‘Kipidap, Dongibab’ will inspire his followers during campaigning.

Rani Kulup will campaign in all five State Legislative Assembly (DUN) constituencies under the Port Dickson Parliament.

The Unsung Hero?

Rani Kulup is said to be a retired army man born on 10 March 1955 in Sayong, Perak.

In 1973 when Rani Kulup was 18 years old, he joined the army when the country was hostile and in turmoil with various non-stop communist terrorist attacks.

He joined the army because he was determined to protect civilians.

It was said that Rani Kulup once fought with communist terrorists in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Apart from fighting in Gua Musang Kelantan, he fought with communist terrorists in other areas such as Kuala Kacau Terengganu Nibong Tebal Penang and many more.

He also claimed that he has participated in more than 65 operations since joining the Malaysian Armed Forces.

The People’s Champion

In recent years, he shot to popularity for making endless police reports on just about any issue that one could think of.

While there is no actual record of the number of police records he made, it is certainly in the thousands.

He also caught attention with his military-style uniform and for always wearing sunglasses.

Rani Kulup’s signature pose is standing in front of a police station while holding a police report, with his sidekicks standing behind him.

He is so persistent that even the Covid-19 pandemic could not stop him from going to the police station.
