Flamboyant lawyer Azwan Ali, 56, announced his withdrawal from contesting in the 15th General Election (GE-15) at the last minute.

Azwan, who had wanted to take on his brother Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, said he would support Pakatan Harapan (PH) instead.

He was the first candidate to arrive at the Gombak Parliamentary nomination centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Pusu at around 7.30 am.

However, he did not hand in the nomination form.

The nomination centre closed at 10 am before the announcement of candidate confirmation by the Election Commission (SPR).

Azwan or better known as Diva AA said he would root for the PH candidate, Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Yes, I will support PH, PH is a consistent party, so Malaysians should vote for the party that can take us in a new direction.

Filial Piety

When asked by reporters, Azwan said he had a dream about his late mother, which changed his mind.

Azwan, trying to hold back his tears, said his mother advised him in his dream not to contest.

His mother, Che Tom Yahaya, passed away in 2017 at the age of 82 years.

According to Azwan, the last time he met Azmin was in GE14, and they lost contact.

In the past, Azwan had expressed regret for his bitter relationship with his brother and acknowledged that he, being the younger sibling, should apologise.

No Love Lost

Azwan said he would oppose his elder brother despite his withdrawal from the election.

In the past, Azwan had been criticised for going against his flesh and blood.

Azwan has been vocal in criticizing his sibling and lodged a report regarding the alleged misuse of power and corruption by the Selangor government to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in December 2017.

He contested against Azmin in the 14th General Election (GE14) in the Bukit Antarabangsa State Assembly (DUN) seat.

He lost badly when he only got 90 votes.

In 2019, there were talks that the brothers would bury the hatchet, but it came to nought.

Meanwhile, in the last general election, Azmin won in Gombak by garnering 75,113 votes.

He defeated the BN candidate, Datuk Abdul Rahim Kamarudin and the Pas candidate, Ir. Khairil Nizam with a majority of 48,721 votes.

Battle Royale

This time, Azmin faces a five-corner fight in his bid to defend Gombak, hardly crowded by today’s standard but still a handful.

The former PKR deputy president, now with Bersatu, faces a strong fight from PH.

Also in the fray is UMNO Gombak chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omar Din, who is for Barisan Nasional (BN).

Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), using the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) logo, is represented by Jamaludin Mohd Tahir.

The other is an independent candidate, Zulkifli Ahmad, who is also president of the unknown Parti Bahtera Sejahtera Malaysia.

Azmin is expected to lose, and for a good reason.

He was the mastermind behind the infamous Sheraton Move at the end of February 2020, which saw the collapse of the PH government.

For that, he is labelled a traitor by PH supporters.
