According to the Malaysian Meteorology Department (MetMalaysia), the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season in Malaysia will start earlier than expected, on November 7, 2022, and continue until March, 2023. Four to six episodes of monsoon surge will potentially result in continuous heavy rain throughout this period.
As in previous seasons, heavy rain that continues for several days can result in flooding in low-lying areas and areas near rivers. If continuous heavy rain occurs simultaneously with high tide events, the risk of flooding can increase. A large tide event is expected to occur in the following period
- 6 – 11 & 22 – 27 November 2022
- 7 – 12 & 22 – 26 December 2022
- 6 – 10 & 21 – 25 January 2023
Sustained and intense northeasterly winds are also expected throughout the MTL, causing rough seas and large waves in the South China Sea.
People are encouraged to prepare for the monsoon season and to stay informed with information, advice, and weather alerts given by MetMalaysia through its website.
