It is difficult to gauge how Malaysians will vote in the coming 15th General Election (GE15).

But one thing is for sure, many Pakatan Harapan supporters do not want Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to reunite with his nemesis Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Many were shocked that Anwar would even contemplate the idea after Dr Mahathir resigned as Prime Minister in 2020, which led to the collapse of the PH government.

The collapse was blamed on the Sheraton Move, but Anwar’s supporters also believed that Dr Mahathir was going all out to prevent Anwar from taking over the premiership.

Previously, it was agreed that Dr Mahathir would pass the baton to his former protege two years after PH took over the federal government.

Many said enough was enough, and they did not want another sudden government collapse.

Some pointed out that Mahathir is 94 and Anwar is 72, so they should both retire for good.

At the same time, some are unsure as they believe that Dr Mahathir might help PH to win again.

Anwar’s political allies in PH have also indicated that it is not a good idea to team up with Dr Mahathir again.

Dr Mahathir recently posted a video on social media to sway Anwar.

The Langkawi MP and Parti Pejuang Tanahair (Pejuang) president said he would put away his ego and personal feelings to work with Anwar.

The Master And The Apprentice

If anyone knew Anwar’s strengths and weaknesses, it would be Dr Mahathir.

After all, Dr Mahathir, who is 22 years more senior than Anwar, was the one who brought the latter into mainstream politics.

Anwar, a former president of Malaysian Islamic Youth (ABIM), joined Umno shortly after Dr Mahathir became prime minister in 1981.

It is well-known that Anwar, given his religious fervour, was poised to join Umno’s arch-foe PAS before Dr Mahathir pried him away.

The camaraderie blossomed until September 1998, when Dr Mahathir sacked his deputy Anwar on claims of corruption and sodomy.

They later reunited in the run-up to the 14th GE in 2018, with Dr Mahathir visiting Anwar while he was still in prison.

Despite the many misgiving Anwar supporters have against Dr Mahathir, they credited him for securing Anwar’s royal pardon in 2018.
