Voters have reacted to news that DAP’s three-term Klang MP Charles Santiago will not defend his seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

Citing party sources, FMT reported that Santiago might not be fielded in any seat.

He would be replaced in Klang by Ganabatirau Veraman, Selangor executive council member and assemblyman for Kota Kemuning.

Initially, it was supposed to be the Seri Kembangan assemblyman, Ean Yong Hian Wah, but the response from the public was not good, so there was a change.

In 2018, Santiago defended his seat with a vast majority of 78,773 votes, beating opponents from Barisan Nasional and PAS.

Enormous Support For Santiago

The public feels that Santiago has diligently served the people in Klang for many years.

Many have taken to social media to voice their displeasure.

Santiago has been outspoken on issues at the national level, including civil rights and constitutional matters.

Santiago is also challenging the recent dissolution of parliament by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

At the same time, voters recalled how he had helped them, including incidents from more than a decade ago.

Santiago is not the only DAP leader who has been rumoured not to defend his seat.

DAP has been said to nominate its former youth leader, Howard Lee, to move from the Pasir Pinji state seat in Perak to contest in the Umno stronghold of Gerik, a parliamentary seat.

Many DAP supporters feel it would be a Herculean task as Gerik, at the border with Thailand, is a rural area with almost 70% Malay voters.

Lee, who speaks flawless Malay, is expected to take on Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

At the same time, it has been rumoured that former Deputy Women, Community and Family Development Minister Hannah Yeoh would make way for a candidate from Muda in Segambut.
