It might be difficult for those of us living abroad to decide whether or not to return home to vote. It’s not that we love our country any less, but it’s frequently impractical from a financial or time-management perspective.

But thanks to postal voting, it is possible to vote from abroad.

How exactly does voting by mail work?

The First Step:

Each constituency will be assigned a returning officer by the Election Commission. They are the election officials designated by the Election Commission to oversee the voting process.

When Election Day approaches, your constituency’s returning officer will distribute postal ballots and ballot boxes. You may check the EC’s website to see if your postal ballots have arrived.

Step 2:

The EC will mail ballots directly to the voter’s abroad address. Previously, ballots were mailed to your host country’s local embassy, high commission, or consulate.

Step 3:

You will be sent a ballot packet with your name and address on it. It will include Borang 2, Envelope B, and two envelopes labelled “A” for Parliament and one for State. This is to cast votes for your chosen candidate at both the national and state levels.

Before you begin voting, check your ballot paper for any markings, misprints, or faults. If there are any, you must immediately notify your embassy in order to obtain a replacement.

Step 4:

After you’ve marked the ballots, fold them and place them back into their respective envelopes. Ballots placed in the incorrect Envelope A will not be counted, so be extra careful with your ballot.

Step 5:

Return the ballot envelope to the Returning Officer of your constituency when you are done. Take caution not to send the ballots through regular mail, instead, utilise the EC-approved methods.

And then, you’re basically done!

You may deliver your ballot through courier service, but you will be responsible for the cost. Otherwise, you may return your ballot to the Malaysian Mission, which will place it in the Special Diplomatic Bag and deliver it to your Returning Officer. The vote must reach the officer before the deadline.

Regardless of the outcome, you have contributed to shaping the future of our nation.
