With tools like Facebook Live available to anyone with a smartphone, the chances of unexpectedly streaming a tragic moment have drastically increased.

Some live streaming deaths are self-inflicted, but some result from random violence or auto accidents.

In the latest example, an Indonesian couple was riding through a quiet afternoon in Sabah, using Facebook to broadcast live video, when they suddenly got into a road accident.

The road accident involved an SUV at Kilometer 10, Jalan Kunak-Tawau, Kunak, on 11 July.

When the incident happened, the phone camera fell to the ground, showing the sky, but the audio continued.

The sad voice of a man and some voices from other individuals, as well as the victim’s child crying and howling, could be heard.

The live stream lasted for 37 minutes. The couple was hit at the 4:55 minute mark.

Netizens offered condolences to the victim’s husband and prayed for the victim’s child and husband to recover quickly.

Those who watched Facebook Live were much saddened when they heard the child crying and calling his mother.

The Fragility Of Life

Kunak District Police Chief, Supt Sabarudin Rahmat, said the victim who died was a 38-year-old woman (pillion rider),  identified as Rina Samo.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the victim’s husband (rider), 39, and their son, 7, were injured in the incident at about 4.45 pm.

He said the SUV, a Proton X70, was driven by a 54-year-old man coming from Tawau towards Kunak.

The Proton X70 had overtaken another vehicle in front of it before colliding with the motorcycle.

The bike was changing lanes to enter the junction on the right side of the road.

The footage showed no car was in front of the motorcycle when it turned.

The SUV that struck them was also not visible in the footage as the car hit them from behind.

It was reported the SUV driver suffered no injuries.

The case will be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
