Two Malaysian Schools Are In The Top 10 World’s Best School Awards List, Here’s What You Need To Know

The finalists are SK Kempadang from Kuantan, Pahang and SMK Kampong Jawa from Klang, Selangor.

Two Malaysian schools have been shortlisted as the top 10 to receive the World’s Best School Award organized by T4 Education.

Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kempadang in Kuantan, Pahang is nominated for the Innovation category while Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kampong Jawa in Klang, Selangor is shortlisted for the Overcoming Adversity category.

The Innovation category recognises “leapfrog” innovation in schools that help improve access, quality, and relevance, especially for the most marginalised children, all at the same time.

Meanwhile, the Overcoming Adversity category recognises schools that, while facing challenges and obstacles, support and develop children in socio-emotional skills to ensure their personal growth and of the school as a community.

There are a total of five categories, the others being Community Collaboration, Supporting Healthy Lives and Environmental Action.

The categories are under the auspices of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

T4 Education said in a statement that the award, launched this year in collaboration with Yayasan Hasanah, Templeton World Charity Foundation, Accenture and American Express, offered a total cash prize of USD250,000 (RM1.106 million).

What’s Next

The top three finalists will be selected for each of the five categories of the World’s Best School Awards, namely Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Addressing Challenges and Supporting Healthy Living.

As one of the top 10 shortlisted finalists, the schools have been invited to share their experience and expertise in a keynote session during World Education Week in October 2022.

The winner of each Prize will be chosen based on rigorous criteria by a Judging Academy made up of distinguished leaders all across the globe.

The panelists include academics, educators, NGOs, social entrepreneurs, government, civil society, and the private sector.

Schools Earn Praise And Admiration

The schools were widely lauded by the public for their achievements. The United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur also congratulated them on their milestone.

The good news also caught the attention of the country’s astronaut, Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor.

Through his Instagram page, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar expressed his admiration that an ordinary school achieved the award.

SK Kempadang and SMK Kampong Jawa are shortlisted for the Best School in the World. Congratulations. I thought that MRSM (Mara Science Junior College) or other elite schools are listed.

National astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor on the the achievements of the two Malaysian schools.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar also said he had never heard of the two schools before.

He plans to visit the schools to see for himself what makes them so great and get to know the teachers and students.

The national hero had already done a search on Google to see where these schools were located.

Meanwhile, some netizens explained why high-performance schools in Malaysia are not listed.

Inspiring Other Schools Around The World

The winners of each category to be announced at World Education Week on October 16 to 21 will receive USD50,000 (RM221,000).

The founder of T4 Education and the World’s Best School Award, Vikas Pota said the shortlisted school was selected through telling inspirational stories that changed students’ lives.

The schools also stood out for having brought real change to the community and became model schools to the public.
