“If the trend of improving cases persists steadily, full border opening and more relaxed domestic measures will follow,” said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said that in a tweet today showcasing a chart with the number of new COVID-19 cases yesterday (27 February 2022) and the decreasing rate of COVID-19 Infectivity (Rt) in Malaysia.

In the chart, the Rt value has been steadily declining from 1.43 to 1.05 over the past two weeks since 13 February to 27 February. Rt value means the effective reproduction number of the virus at a given time (currently 1.05) while R-naught (R0) means the initial reproduction number of the virus at the beginning of the pandemic which was around 1.4 and 2.4. An Rt value above 1.0 means that the virus is spreading fast, hence, a lower number of Rt is what we’re striving for.

Based on the numbers, Khairy concluded that it was too early to say that we have gone past the Omicron peak as the numbers may increase again if we’re not vigilant enough.

He continued to say that around 96% of our active cases are recovering at home and our hospital capacity is still under control.

If this good trend continues, we are looking at more relaxed Covid-19 SOPs in Malaysia and Malaysia will be reopening its gates to the world safely, one step at a time.

As the threat of COVID-19 is still persisting, everyone must stay vigilant and protect themselves and their loved ones. Wear proper masks in public spaces and remember to always practice good personal hygiene. We must not take things for granted as the fight is still not over.
