Malaysians have always wanted to become a society that’s gracious and rich in spirit, where people are considerate and kind to one another.

In fact, Malaysians are generally very attentive towards how they respectfully interact with people of all backgrounds.

A recent example is Twitter user Raff Radzuan who shared a post by a Hindu devotee who reminded the public to respect Sri Subramaniam Temple in Batu Caves.

The temple is well-known to be a tourist attraction, with its 272 multi-colored stairs being one of the main highlights.

Unfortunately, it would seem that the temple had been ‘misused’ by some individuals.

The matter was highlighted by Facebook user Sam Gv, urging visitors to be aware that the temple area is not a place to do jogging and hiking activities.

I’m at the temple every Sunday morning and today I really cannot take it. So I went to the counter next to the staircase step and spoke to one of the lady which was sitting at the counter. I ask her why they are jogging here and there’s no action taken, this is a temple.

Accordingly, the temple management had been telling visitors to respect the place but it fell on deaf ears.

Sam Gv said the temple management should put up a prohibition sign so that visitors can be more aware of the do’s and dont’s.

Don’t forget this is our temple and is for us to pray.

Opinions Divided

Some netizens said they are fine with places of worship being used for sports, so long as the proper dress code is observed.

Others said the matter had been blown out of proportion and said there is absolutely nothing wrong to jog at the temple.

At the same time, netizens pointed out that sporting events had indeed been held at Batu Caves.

However, that was quite some time ago and the temple management had prohibited any sporting activities ever since.
