About 100 account holders registered with a local bank are asking for their accounts to be unfrozen.

A spokesman for the group described the bank’s actions, which had frozen the accounts for the past week, as inappropriate and affected many of their daily financial affairs.

The spokesman, 26-year-old Mohd Aimullah Mohd Zain, said the bank’s action in freezing the account without any notice and reasonable explanation should not have happened.

For example, in my case, there was an account freeze on 25 January and I could not withdraw even RM10. I contacted the bank and they informed me it was their fault due to a system problem.

Recently, he and others sent a memorandum to Malaysia Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) lead activist Datuk Nadzim Johan.

They are seeking PPIM’s help to resolve the problem.

Bank Processing Error

Meanwhile, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said in a statement that a mistake was made by a local bank.

As a result of the mistake, hundreds of accounts are frozen and its holders in debt due to ‘excessive amounts’ credited by the bank into customer accounts.

In an emailed response to the media, the central bank said the bank was now trying to recover the excess amount credited to their customers.

Meanwhile, netizens commented on social media that both the bank and account holders have a responsibility to bear.

They opined that the bank had done wrong, and so did the account holders if they used the extra money in their account despite not knowing its source.

A Facebook user, Firdaus Asraf said he was among those affected by the bank’s mistake.

Firdaus said the bank had released his money.

He claimed the bank had previously demanded that he return the money, which he had never received nor spent.
