Sleep is such an essential part of our daily routine.

Science says that an adult needs an average of between seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night to keep one’s physical and mental well-being in check. The same is true for children and the elderly.

But sometimes it can be challenging for people to even begin to rest comfortably when they have more important things on their minds.

Underprivileged families in Malaysia often struggle to slumber snuggly since they might not afford some of the common comforts that most of us take for granted.

This literal sleep deprivation was witnessed first-hand by local philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng A.K.A ‘Uncle Kentang’, who’s leading a mission to help the country’s impoverished individuals rest better at night.

Uncle Kentang shares of how some families are forced to make do with sleeping on whatever they may have laying around.

One family was living in a wooden house with four children and only had thin sponge mattresses sandwiched together to make their bed.

While another household saw an elderly 85-year-old ‘Po-Po’ sleeping on a thin old mattress – placed precariously on the floor for someone in her age.

“We hope that with better sleep, they can work more diligently the next day to provide for their families,” said Uncle Kentang, explaining how his collaboration with sleeping experts, Joey Mattress, could help poverty-stricken people lead better lives.

Together, the project contributed RM52,220 worth of mattresses and pillows to 26 underprivileged families in the Klang Valley, Perak, Johor, and Pahang.

Joey Mattress Co-founder and CMO (chief marketing officer) Joey Tan said that the company was eager to work more with Uncle Kentang on donating bedding to people in need of assistance.

Joey Mattress is focused on bringing better sleep to all Malaysians, not just paying customers. It is our honour to assist in providing great sleep to more Malaysians.

Malaysians are together invited to contact Uncle Kentang on Facebook to help send over bedding products from Joey Mattress to the underprivileged.
