Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has met Opposition leaders in Putrajaya to calm the political climate in the country and discuss on fighting Covid-19.

According to a joint statement released by the political leaders, the meeting lasted for more than an hour and focused on the people’s interest agenda in finding the best common ground to address the pandemic and also the rakyat’s economic woes.

Also present at the meeting were PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah President Mohamad Sabu, and DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya.

Paying tribute to the advice of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Anmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah to calm the political temperature in the country, Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has invited opposition leaders to hold meetings and discussions to realise His Majesty’s wishes.

The statement also read that a mutual agreement was reached in strengthening the function of the Malaysian Parliament as a responsible and constructive institution, reviewing and balancing executive governance to be more transparent and meet the needs of the people.

We also agree and understand the importance of the independence of the judiciary, institutional reform and good governance to ensure a more conducive environment for the people and the country in the context of Keluarga Malaysia.

Pakatan wants all Opposition parties under the ‘Big Tent’

The Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council has decided that the Leader of the Opposition will hold a meeting with key leaders of all Opposition parties in the near future, including inviting them to join or work with Pakatan Harapan.

In a statement released online, this is in line with the resolution of the Pakatan Harapan Leadership Retreat in Port Dickson in April which states the openness of Pakatan Harapan to negotiate, cooperate and mobilize all the manpower under the ‘Big Tent’ concept to strengthen the opposition bloc comprising 105 MPs.

The ‘Big Tent’ concept is described by Cambridge Dictionary as a political party or group that includes many different groups or ideas, and so it can attract a wide range of supporters.

It’s also stated that the meeting will discuss current political issues as well as preparations for the upcoming Parliamentary session on 6 September or earlier if there’s a special session to call for a confidence vote on the Prime Minister and to fill the vacancy of the Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker after the resignation of Datuk Seri Azlina Othman Said.

Pakatan Harapan’s focus is towards becoming an effective Opposition by expressing constructive and responsible criticism, recommendations and views, as well as presenting appropriate alternative proposals to government policies, especially on efforts to address Covid-19, revive the economy, and saving the lives and livelihoods of the people.

The party said they will prioritize institutional reforms, legal reforms, as well as fighting for the independence of the judiciary which should not be disturbed by any party.

PH has also came out saying that they will consider the invitation of joining the National Rehabilitation Council (NRC) and the Covi-19 Taskforce, saying that it’s to ensure that these bodies are addressing the pandemic and economic recession and not just act as a ‘rubber stamp’ to the views of the government alone.
