Perikatan Nasional (PN) has unanimously agreed to nominate former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as the new Prime Minister.

Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Md Yasin said that this bloc consists of 50 Dewan Rakyat Members from PN coalition parties, including:

  • 31 BERSATU
  • 18 PAS
  • 1 STAR

He also said that 4 Pro-PN Independent Dewan Rakyat members have done the same.

I have also consulted with the leaders of the GPS and PBS parties that formed the previous National Alliance Government to take a similar resolution.

This decision, he said, was made to ensure the continuity of Perikatan Nasional policies, which focuses on efforts to combat Covid-19 and restore the country until the time is right for General Elections to be held to restore the mandate to the people.

This decision also means that the Perikatan Nasional prioritises political stability and the well-being of the people over the politics of revenge in the competition for power.

When faced with a crisis situation, Malaysia’s 8th Prime Minister said that politicians must be magnanimous for the sake of the people and the country.

In line with the principles of the Perikatan Nasional to defend a government with integrity, I would like to emphasize that the PN’s support for YB Dato ‘Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who is also the Vice President of UMNO is conditional.

Mahiaddin also said that the next PM must ensure that the Cabinet Members who will be appointed later are those with integrity, trustworthy and free from any criminal charges in court.

He added that the government under the new Prime Minster’s leadership must also continue the practice of respecting the principle of separation of powers, protecting the independence of the judiciary and upholding the concept of a Constitutional Monarch.

I hope the process of appointing the new Prime Minister can run smoothly and be finalized in the near future in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Constitution. As the Chairman of the National Alliance, I will continue to serve the people and prepare the party to face the 15th General Election when the time comes.
