The Dewan Rakyat Committee is looking at reviewing the total capacity of individuals including the number of MPs that can attend the next Parliament sitting, said the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon.

He was quoted by Bernama saying that it’s to ensure that the next session can run smoothly and also prevent another Covid-19 outbreak when it’s scheduled to begin 6 September.

Rashid added that a discussion will be held by the Committee along with the whip leaders from both the government and opposition sides in the near future based on the advice to be submitted by the Health Ministry and the National Security Council (MKN).

The Dewan Rakyat Committee will call all the chief whips from the government and opposition parties to discuss (the number of MPs present). Learning from what happened at the recent special session of the Dewan Rakyat, we need more robust preventive measures.

The Special Meeting of the Third Term only sat for what was effectively 3 and a half days when it was supposed to take place for 5 days, from 26 to 29 July and on 2 August.

However, it was cut short due to an outbreak of Covid-19 and as of August 8 a total of 88 positive cases have been linked to Parliament, including one death.
