Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon said that the Dewan Rakyat Select Committee will propose an 80 MP limit for the lower house of Parliament sitting from July 26.

New Straits Times reported that the decision would most likely be decided next week before the Dewan Rakyat sits.

This proposal is the same as the resolution adopted at last year’s sitting. Like last year, out of 222 MPs, only 80 could enter.

Additionally, each minister and deputy minister may only bring along one or two staff members with them. Strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including a Covid-19 screening test will also be imposed.

We are ready to sit for five days for the lower house and three days for the upper house. So all questions related to Covid-19 will be tabled using the rules of explanation by the relevant Minister.

The Special Session of the Dewan Rakyat will sit for five days starting at 10 am on 26 to 29 July and 2 August.

The Dewan Negara session meanwhile will take place for three days from 3 to 5 August.

It will see 44 lawmakers from the government and 36 from the opposition bench. Members in attendance may switch between the morning and evening sessions.

The goal is to brief all Members of Parliament on the National Recovery Plan and amend all laws and regulations to enable Parliamentary sittings to be held in a hybrid manner.

As of 8 July, the government holds 108 seats, the opposition holds 112 seats, and two more seats are vacant.
