The Prime Minister’s Office announced that Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has also been appointed as Deputy Prime Minister.

Ismail Sabri will still retain his position as the Defense Minister.

At the same time, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is now a Senior Minister, retaining the portfolio of Foreign Affairs.

In his new position, Hishammuddin will also head the Security Cluster previously headed by Ismail Sabri.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Md Yasin has also agreed for Hishammuddin to assist in the implementation of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

Both appointments have been presented to the Agong and are in effect immediately.

The statement said “It is hoped that this appointment will further enhance capabilities of the Perikatan National Government (PN) especially in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, strengthen unity among the parties that form the government, and strengthen the PN Government with governance that is transparent, corruption-free, and has integrity.”

Malaysia’s previous Deputy Prime Minister was Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. She held the position from 21 May 2018 to 24 February 2020. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad was the Prime Minister at the time.
