When Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah lamented that the R0 (R naught) of Covid-19 in the country on 28 June was at 1 in a 4 am Facebook post, little did the nation know that he was preparing us for a big shock.

According to the latest numbers from the Ministry of Health, there are 6,437 new covid cases in the country. Once again Selangor has the highest number of new cases at 2,299, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 1,361 new cases.

Monday (21 June) last week, shows the number of new cases dipped to 4,411, giving hope that the country will be able to achieve the conditions needed to go into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan.

However, the number of cases has been slowly rising and has hovered between 5,000 and 6,000 cases with an R0 only as low as 0.96.

This is despite MCO 3.0 and the SOP under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan which had the country under total lockdown since the beginning of June.

The culprit could be the new highly infectious variant, Delta.

In a Facebook post, Dr Noor Hisham noted that the Delta variant is more transmissible than all the other variants.

Based on recent data the Delta variant has an R0 of 5 to 8. That means a single person who has the Delta variant of Covid-19, on average, can infect between 5 to 8 other people.

To put that in perspective, the original virus has an R0 of 2.4 to 2.6.
