Special Meeting of Malay Rulers Calls For End To State Of Emergency

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah met with other Malay Rulers at the Istana Negara today (16 June) for a special meeting to discuss efforts to combat Covid-19.

The meeting was attended by:

  • The Yang di-Pertuan Agong
  • The Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin
  • The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah
  • The Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir
  • The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar
  • The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah
  • The Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah
  • Acting Sultan of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah
  • The Ruler Of Perlis represented by Raja Muda Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalulail

The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad in a press statement wrote that in the meeting, His Majesty informed the other Malay Rulers in attendance that he has met with 18 political leaders, virtually and face to face, it the Istana negara from 9 June to 15 June.

In the meeting, the other Malay rulers shared their views and expressed their opinions on these issues:

  • The daily Covid-19 infection numbers are still high despite the country declaring a state of emergency.
  • The worrying economic and financial state of the country.
  • The unstable political landscape in the country.
  • The division among the people in the country is widening.
  • The increasing hardship faced by the people from their lost of job and income.
  • The situation with work, life, and education at schools and education centers that are affected and the difficulty it causes.
  • The Muslims who could not worship and pray at mosques and suraus. And worshippers of other faiths are also prevented from their religious affairs.

The Malay Rulers agree in the following matters:

  • The life and livelihood of the people must take precedence over other matters.
  • The vaccination program must be enhanced by reducing bureaucracy so that herd immunity (80% vaccination) may be achieved as soon as possible.
  • Programmes to combat Covid-19 has to be understood by the people and gain their support without inciting doubt nor be looked at as a political ploy.
  • The methods used to to combat Covid-19 has to be inclusive in nature, involve all interested parties , and be done with the attitude of ready to listen, ready to learn, ready to make changes, ready to implement improvements, and ready to explore new options until the full confidence and cooperation of the people at all levels is achieved.
  • The heated political scene must be brought under control.
  • The importance of a stable government that has the confidence and support of the majority of the people.
  • There is no need for the country to continue to be in a state of emergency after 1 August.

The Malay Rulers also expressed the importance of checks and balances especially in affairs involving the country’s finance and expenses.

In the same vein, the Malay Rulers unanimously share the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s stand to order the parliament to reconvene.

At the state level , the Malay Rulers are also of the opinion that the state assembly of each state should reconvene as soon as possible.

Methods and procedures during these assemblies, such as those currently practiced in several other countries, that have been proven effective in controlling the spread of Covid-19, should be introduced and adopted in this country.
