There’s an increasing trend of Covid-19 patients in 4 and 5 category as 30,287 cases have been recorded in May compared to 6,751 in April, according to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.
This figure is expected to increase further for this month, he said, as 22,857 cases classified under these two categories have been recorded as of yesterday.
It’s reported that patients in category 4 are those who require supplemental oxygen while category 5 patients are deemed critically ill and needs to be on ventilator support.

Dr Adham also touched on the usage of intensive care unit (ICU) beds for treating Covid-19, saying that it has reached 97%.
Currently 1,767 ICU beds nationwide – including government and military hospitals – have been used so far, with 1,161 patients undergoing treatments, 452 are on ventilator support.
Last month, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham warned that depleting ICU beds might mean that doctors will have to make the tough decision of prioritising assistance for those who have a higher chance of recovery.
He added that although it is not desired by any health worker, they have to make that difficult choice if the health system reaches maximum capacity.
