In a Press Statement yesterday (5 June), Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced that there are 701 active of Covid-19 clusters in the country including 24 new ones. This takes the total number of clusters to 2,308 with 1,607 expired clusters.
The latest cluster in Sabah is said to have be triggered by Hari Raya celebration visits.
Sabah State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the Block 31 cluster in Tawau has 31 positive cases so far. Its index case was a 71-year old housewife who tested positive at a screening at Tawau Hospital on 27 May.
In a report by Bernama, Masidi, who is also the state government’s spokesperson for Covid-19, said: “Following close contact screenings, nine tested positive, in addition to the 21 new cases today.
“Close contact tracing is being intensified to detect the source of infection.”
Another cluster detected in Sabah
Another new cluster was recorded yesterday in the Gambaron workplace cluster in Telupid with 12 positive cases so far.
The index case is a 32-year-old man who is believed to have contracted the virus while attending a social gathering on 22 May at a café in Telupid. The spread of cases was also contributed by his colleagues who had returned to high-risk areas in Tawau to celebrate Aidilfitri.
It is believed that the index case developed a cough and shortness of breath on 26 May, a week before he was confirmed positive at the Telupid Health Clinic.
