KL Tower To Be Lit Up As M’sia Joins Fight Against Neglected Tropical Diseases

Joining other landmarks across the world, the iconic KL Tower will be lit up tomorrow (January 30) as a sign of Malaysia joining with 23 other countries in the fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
Untreated NTDs lead to cognitive impairment and developmental disabilities, and severe forms can cause malnutrition and death.

NTDs include mosquito-born viral infections such as dengue as well as rabies, two diseases which continue to plague Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic.
At a time when our world has more empathy for and awareness of the threat of infectious disease, it is our collective responsibility to end diseases that are entirely preventable.

While the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic has drawn attention and resources away from other health issues such as NTDs, MOH pointed out it also brought about unprecedented collaboration.
There is opportunity to apply the unprecedented collaboration around #COVID19 to address NTDs. This includes cross-sector, cross-industry partnerships, building strong political will, and generating resources necessary to reach the last mile.

This is also only the second time January 30 will be recognised as World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day.
MOH and The Institute for Clinical Research (ICR), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Malaysia in partnership with the Crown Prince Court of Abu Dhabi, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Carter Center, The END Fund, Uniting to Combat NTDs, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and more than 300 government, health, community and business leaders, will use this occasion to launch a meaningful series of activities in support of eliminating NTDs from the planet.
We all need to leverage on big data analytics and multi-sectoral evidence-based programs to eradicate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
