The American digital nomad who rattled Southeast Asians with a viral social media post about her “elevated lifestyle” in Bali is being kicked off the island.
According to reports, US citizens Kristen Gray who’s been living on the island since 2019 is to be immediately deported on the next flight out for breaking Indonesian law.
Bali’s Ministry of Law and Human Rights Chief Jamaruli Manihuruk was quoted as saying that Gray was suspected of carrying out illegal business practices without a business visa and spreading “unsettling information” to the public.
She stated that she could provide easy access to Bali through the recommended agency and offered the low living costs in Bali, that is comfortable and LGBTQ+ friendly. She is suspected of carrying out business activities by selling e-books and put a rate for consulting (about) Bali tourism.Jamaruli Manihuruk via ABC News
Gray was said to be staying in Indonesia under a visitor-stay permit valid until 24 January 2021 and is being detained by authorities. She and her partner Saundra will be waiting for the next available flight to the US.
In their defence, Gray said that she has done nothing wrong and that they were being persecuted for being gay.
I am not guilty. I have not overstayed my visa. I have not made money in Indonesian rupiah in Indonesia. I put out a statement about LGBT and I am being deported about LGBT.Kristen Gray via Vulture
Gray was criticized online for her triggering comments about living in Bali and had supposedly encouraged others to follow in her footsteps by promoting her presumably self-written e-book titled “Our Bali Life Is Yours”.
