Deputy Communications & Multimedia Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement released by his office today, the deputy minister received his results this morning (13 January) and has been sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

Datuk Zahidi is in stable condition and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

The deputy minister took the Covid-19 test on 11 January shortly after arriving in Kuala Lumpur from Penang.

He is the latest Cabinet member to be infected after three ministers also tested positive earlier this week – including PM Department Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Woman, Family & Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.

Social media reacts

As news of the colourful Deputy Minister’s diagnosis broke, online sleuths couldn’t help but point out Zahidi’s face-mask wearing habits.

He is often spotted with the face mask pulled down to his chin instead of covering his nose and mouth.

Vevenoah Mosibin, the young Sabahan university student who vent viral last year for spending 24 hours atop a tree to get strong enough internet connection for her examinations, was also the topic of discussion following the deputy minister’s diagnosis.

Zahidi Zainul Abidin had accused her in Parliament of lying about sitting for an examination, instead saying that she was merely a YouTuber who wanted to gain fame.

He later issued a public apology to Veveonah, but the damage was done as she was subject to a slew of attacks online and took a break from her online social media platforms.
