The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) wishes that the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination will continue as planned despite the uncertainty over rising Covid-19 cases in the country.
The SPM examination was scheduled to be held in February 2021, which was delayed from the end of last year due to the pandemic.
The president of NUTP Aminuddin Awang said that the SPM examination is a crucial certificate for students, whether to help them enter the workforce or to allow them to continue their tertiary studies.
Awang also noted that the students sitting for the SPM examination are adults at the age of 18, and would be mature enough to comply with current Covid-19 SOPs.
Additionally, the examination is also recognized internationally, so further delays to the examination may affect students at more than just a local level.
However, Awang has agreed to abide by any decision made by government in regards to the examination or to schools opening.
The NUTP is confident that the ministries involved will be able to make the best decision with advice from the National Security Council and the current risk analysis.
