The Ministry of Health (MOH) has proposed stricter standard operating procedures (SOPs) including restricting cross-district and state travel following the increase in the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said that through the data examined by the Ministry, there’s a sharp increase in the spread of the disease recently involving inter-district and state cases.

He said that increase in sporadic cases in the community occurs especially when cross-state and district travel are allowed, as well as due to social gatherings.

MOH found that the main factor in the sharp increase in cases was non-compliance with the SOP which was outlined during the reopening of the economic sector previously. Cases are increasing in densely populated areas with easy movement including Selangor, Federal Territories, Johor, Penang and Sabah.

Dr Adham said that the government is currently refining and evaluating the actions that need to be taken immediately to control the spread, including considering stricter SOPs involving the social sector.

The Health Ministry is also reviewing the actual capacity of the hospitals gazetted as Covid-19 Hospitals to accommodate symptomatic patients and added that MOH would also reactivate more treatment and quarantine centers for low-risk patients nationwide.

Among them is the Malaysian Agricultural Expo Park (MAEPS) which can accommodate up to 10,000 positive patients.

So far, he said, MOH facilities are still able to accommodate the increase in cases but strict methods to control the Covid-19 curve need to be implemented immediately before the capacity is exceeded.

Our front line of specialist doctors, ventilator machine operators and physicians who handle Covid-19 cases with symptoms of levels three to five are now struggling to cope with the sharp increase in cases. We need to look at the team of nurses and medical assistants who are helping as well as their ability to treat patients including non-Covid-19s who also need to be given attention.
