The government needs cooperation from the community to stop throwing garbage “everywhere” as it makes the country’s flood problems worse.

Environment and Water Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Zaini Ujang explained that it takes longer for flooded areas to recover due to trash clogging up tributaries and drainage systems, and hindering the flow of water back to rivers.

During floods, garbage and plant debris clogs up drainage systems and makes it harder for water to recede from an area.

He said that a lot of money is needed to maintain these drainage systems and asks for the public to stop littering.

Act of God or man-made mistake?

Malaysians are already accustomed to news of relentless rain and ongoing floods. It is said that between 2012 and 2019, more Malaysians were exposed and have been affected by floods than any other ASEAN country

Furthermore, it is estimated that floods have cost the nation around RM5.82 billion in damages in the last 20 years.

Experts note that environmental degradation, unchecked development and poorly managed drainage systems are mostly the cause to Malaysia’s flood problems.
