The pandemic has badly hit Kuala Lumpur’s bars and pubs so much that they want to change their business in order to survive.

After meeting with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the Restaurant And Bistro Owners Association (RBOA) said that DBKL agrees that business owners, namely pubs and bars to have the flexibility to convert their premise to a new business or industry, as long as it’s not prohibited by the Federal Government.

However, DBKL has yet to issue an official announcement on the permission to allow for these businesses to be converted.

RBOA highlighted that there are premises with entertainment licenses and have not been operating since 18th March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Movement
Control Order (MCO).

It’s estimated that roughly 20% of these business have gone bankrupt, while almost half of workforce in the sector have been let go, based on reports by The Star.

DBKL encourages applicants to send in their request to RBOA for consolidation and liaison with DBKL. In turn, RBOA will submit the forms on a weekly basis and expedite the process.

It’s one of the requests from the association to help reduce the losses experienced due to Covid-19.

It was to allow these premises to apply for an additional operational license or permit for them to operate as a non-entertainment premise, without jeopardizing their existing entertainment license status.

They’ve also requested for DBKL to waive the Quit Rent and Assessment Fee for landlords whom are renting their premises to affected licensed operators.

RBOA said KL Mayor Datuk Mahadi Bin Che Ngah has taken these proposal on board, he will deliberate and discuss with the necessary stakeholders.
