The government is extending the employment insurance system as one of the six initiatives meant to reduce the financial burden on Malaysians during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz, currently, SOCSO is supporting Malaysians who have lost their jobs through a programme called “Job Search Allowance” or “Elaun Mencari Pekerjaan”.
He said the allowance is provided to recipients for six months and recipients are eligible to receive 80% of their salary during the first month, which then gradually reduces on a monthly basis, to 30%.
Under Budget 2021, however, the allowance period will be extended for an extra three months and recipients can request to receive 80% of their salary during the first month, then 50% of their salary for the second to sixth month, and finally 30% for the last three months.
For this, the government is allocating RM150 million which is expected to assist as many as 130,000 unemployed Malaysians.
